What is a Dedimus Justice?
The office of Dedimus Justice is unique to the State of Maine.
Dedimus Justices are appointed by the Governor and serve for life,
fulfilling the function of administering the
Oath of Office to elected and appointed officials,
as required by the
Constitution.
Dedimus Justices may administer the Oath of Office to a wide variety of
public servants, including Commissioners of Maine State Government
departments, county and municipal officials, members of various boards and
commissions, as well as Notaries Public.
The office of Dedimus Justice is as old as the State of Maine,
and then some. Here's a little history.
